An acute form of p. in which the air vesicles are the seat of an inflammatory deposit of coagulable fibrin, which fills them and paralyzes their action. Usually it involves a lobe or an entire lung. It is most commonly caused by infection with the Diplococcus pneumoniae, but it may be caused by a variety of other organisms.
