-
A negro republic on the west coast of Africa. It was at first a colony of free negroes founded by the American Colonization Society in 1816 for the betterment of the negroes in the United States. It was at first governed by the whites, but became independent in 1847. After the Civil War many of the freed slaves in the United States were permitted and, indeed, encouraged to migrate to Liberia, and financial aid was afforded them to do so. A treaty of commerce was concluded in 1862.
