An indigenous shrub, growing in moist, shady places, in all parts of the United States; flowering early in spring. All parts of the shrub have a spicy, agreeable flavour, which is strongest in the bark and berries. An infusion or decoction of the small branches is used in popular practice as a vermifuge, and an agreeable drink in low fevers. The bark has been used in intermittents; the berries, dried and powdered, for allspice. The oil of the berries is used as an excitant.
