Syn.: amyloid disease, waxy k. A form of chronic nephritis, often secondary to syphilis and characterized by infiltration with lardaceous or amyloid matter, of the malpighian bodies and arteries, and the tubes, epithelium, and intertubular textures. The disease is consecutive to, or coexistent with, similar disease in the spleen and liver. The organ affected is distinguishable from the large white k. by being harder, tougher, and firmer. It has a waxy appearance, and responds to the iodin test.
