A German theologian; born at Bischofswerda, Saxony, Aug. 25, 1741; died near Halle, April 23, 1792. He was condemned to imprisonment in 1789 for publishing "The Religious Edict: a Comedy". As a theologian, he was noted for extreme rationalism. He wrote: "Letters on Systematic Theology" (2 vols., 1770-72); "Newest Revelations of God" (1773); while in prison, "History of his Life" (4 vols., 1790), etc.
