A celebrated Swiss historian; born at Schaffhausen, Jan. 3, 1752; died at Cassel, Prussia, May 29, 1809. He held a number of positions in the service of Mainz, Austria, and Prussia, and when he died was director-general of education in the kingdom of Westphalia. His principal works were: "History of the Swiss" (new ed., 5 vols., 1786-1808), and "24 Books of Universal History" (3 vols., 1811; new ed. 1852).
