An Italian poet and historian (1824-80); born in Rome. He was a jurist, and from 1874 till his death was professor of modern history in the University of Rome. Among his poetical works are some imitations of the Russian Pushkin; an epic, "Stella"; and two volumes of "Various Poems". He wrote several works on the history of literature, also biographies and histories of special periods. His principal work appeared posthumously: "Modern History", from 1492 to the Peace of Westphalia.
