A noted Scottish geologist, whose writings first made geology popularly known; born at Cromarty, Oct. 10, 1802; died near Edinburgh, Dec. 2, 1856. Beginning life as a stone-mason (1819-36), he became bank accountant at Cromarty (1834), and editor of an Edinburgh newspaper (1840). His chief works were: "The Old Red Sandstone" (1841); "Footprints of the Creator" (1847); "My Schools and Schoolmasters" (1852); "Testimony of the Rocks" (1857). He published besides "Poems" (1829); "Scenes and Legends of the North of Scotland" (1835); etc.
