An eminent German Orientalist; born at Erfurt, Jan. 15, 1624; died at Frankfort on the Main, April 8, 1704. He traveled extensively through Europe; and while visiting Rome made the acquaintance of the Abyssinian patriarch Gregorius, and from him acquired a knowledge of the Ethiopian language. He is said to have understood 25 languages. He wrote: "Sketch of the History of Ethiopia" (1681); "Grammar of the Amharic Language" (1698); "Ethiopic-Latin Dictionary"; "Ethiopic Grammar".

- mixed-function oxygenase that catalyzes hydroxylation prolyl-glycyl-containing-peptide, usually in protocollagen, hydroxyprolylglycyl-peptide. The enzyme utilizes molecular oxygen with a concomitant oxidative decarboxylation of 2-oxoglutarate to succinate. EC 1.14.11.2.
