A French novelist; born near Rouen, May 20, 1830. He has been a prolific writer. Of his numerous works the best known are: "The Victims of Love", in three parts; "The Lovers" (1859); "Husband and Wife" (1865); "The Children" (1866); "Doctor Claude" (1879); "Accomplices" (1892); "In the Bosom of the Family" (1893); "Blue Blood"; "The Novel of my Novels", etc. Most of his books treat of French life under the Second Empire.
