An American scholar and author; born in New York State in 1849. He is, since 1907, president of the University of Chicago. His works include: "Caesar's Army, a Study of the Military Art of the Romans" (1888); "Europe in the Nineteenth Century"; "The Growth of the American Nation"; "The Essentials of a Written Constitution".
