An English novelist and poet; born in Paris, France, in 1830. He was educated at Bonn, and became an officer in the British army. His poems include: "Eleanore and Other Poems" (1856); "The Romance of the Scarlet Leaf and Other Poems" (1865), and "Songs without Music" (1882). Among a long list of novels are: "Rita", an autobiography (1859); "Carr of Carlyon"; "The Marstons" (1868); "Poet and Peer" (1880); "The Cliff Mystery" (1888); "Voyage of Discovery", depicting American society (1892); "Elizabeth's Pretenders" (1895).
