A German classical philologist; born in Landsberg-on-the-Warthe, March 20, 1800; died in Halle, May 14, 1875. He lectured very brilliantly at the leading universities, his principal works being "Greek Syntax Scientifically Considered" (1829), a historical study of the subject; "Outlines of Roman Literature" (5th ed. 1872); "Outlines of Greek Literature" (part i., 5th ed. 1892; part ii., 2d-3d ed. 1876-80; part iii. wanting), and a supplement to the first-named treatise, entitled "Paralipomena[Omissions] in[the Work on] Greek Syntax" (1854-62); although he has written many other important books.
