A Russian explorer; born at Riga, Dec. 29, 1836. He studied at Heidelberg, Munich, and Berlin. He investigated the flora and fauna of the valley of the Nile (1864-66), and is the author of "Nile Vegetation" (1862); "Contribution to the Flora of Ethiopia" (1867); "Reliquiae Kotschyarae" (1868); "In the Heart of Africa" (2 vols., 1874).
