was appointed lieutenant-general under the Virginia Company, and came to Virginia in 1609 with seven ships. The colony did not prosper, and Gates was sent to England in 1610, returning with men and provisions in 1611. He assumed the government, and the colony became more prosperous under his rule, which continued till 1614, when he returned to England.
