A South African plant, Ord. Compositae; known under the name Snakeroot, from its reputed effects as an antidote to the bites of venomous serpents. The root is a great favourite with the Boers in chest discases-as asthma-and in affections in which a free secretion from the mucous membrane of the bronchia is indicated. It has diaphoretic properties, and acts as a diuretic in gout and dropsy. It is given in decoction or tincture. Dr. Pappe thinks the root ought to have a place in the Materia Medica.
