A German romance-writer and humorist; born 1816; died 1877. He was in both military and mercantile life for a time, and based some of his most popular works on his personal experiences. Among his writings are: "Scenes of Military Life"; "The Soldier's Life in Peace"; "Traffic and Trade" (Handel and Wandel); "Anonymous Stories"; "Pilgrimage to Mecca"; "Pictures of Life": "Forbidden Fruit". His position in German literature is one of great distinction.
