Newton supposed that the molecules of light in their progress through space pass continually into alternate states which recur periodically at equal intervals. In one of these it is disposed to obey the reflective forces of the body which it meets ; it is then in a Fit of easy reflexion. In the other state it is disposed to obey the refractive forces of the body, and is then in a Fit of easy transmission. Newton proposed by this means to account for the colours of thin plates.
