Enterotomy, same etymon. In anatomy, it signifies dissection of the intestines. In surgery, it means an operation, little used, which consists in opening the intestines, in order to evacuate the faecal matters accumulated in it; for example, in certain cases of hernia, accompanied with contraction of the intestinal canal; in operations for an artificial anus, performed on the new-born, where the rectum is imperforate or not existing, &c.
