A lighted coal, smoldering amid ashes; -- used chiefly in the plural, to signify mingled coals and ashes; the smoldering remains of a fire. ``He rakes hot embers.'' --Dryden.

He takes a lighted ember out of the covered vessel. --Colebrooke.
