An English playwright and poet; born at Dunstable, 1648; died at London, 1723. His chief plays are: "The Empress of Morocco" (1673); "Love and Revenge" (1675); "Pastor Fido, or the Faithful Shepherd" (1677), after Guarini; "The Female Prelate; or, The Life and Death of Pope Joan" (1680); "Distressed Innocence; or, The Princess of Persia" (1682).
