An American Episcopal clergyman and philosophical writer; born at Montrose, Pa., Nov. 19, 1833; died at Cambridge, Mass., Dec. 9, 1885. He wrote "The Nation" (new ed. 1876) and "The Republic of God" (1881), two works of great elevation of thought and expression.
