A Hebrew poet; born at Kiriat-Sefer, in the eighth century. He wrote 150 liturgical chants, of but slight literary value, for use in the synagogue. His religious fame and influence in Italy, Germany, and France were great. He is known as the creator of the Neo-Hebraic poetry, so called; it imitated the Arabic in having, for instance, verses of fixed length, rhyme, and the acrostic.
