A prominent American Congregational divine and religious writer; born at Schoharie, N. Y., March 2, 1832; died in Chicago, April 9, 1894. Having served in the Civil War (1862-63), he became pastor in Massachusetts and California, missionary in Austria (1873-78), professor in the Hartford Congregational Theological Seminary (1881-92), and the McCormick Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Chicago (1892-94). He published "Historic Origin of the Bible" (1873) and various other religious works, including a curious edition of "Genesis Printed in Colors, Showing the Original Sources from which it is Supposed to have been Compiled" (1892).
