(1703-1758), born in Connecticut, was the most eminent metaphysician America has ever produced. In 1727 he was ordained pastor at Northampton, MA, where he remained until 1750. From 1751 to 1758 he preached to the Indians at Stockbridge. He was a most prolific writer upon religion and metaphysics, and in 1754 published his famous "Inquiry into the Freedom of the Will."
