(1591-1658), a prosperous English merchant, came to Massachusetts in 1637, explored the Connecticut coast, and in 1638 planted a colony at New Haven, of which he became one of the "Seven Pillars" who formed the government, and was made the first Governor. He was one of the commissioners who formed the "United Colonies of New England" in 1643.
