(1752-1817), of Connecticut, divine, poet and teacher, while chaplain in the Continental army composed his poem "Columbia." From 1795 to 1817, he was president of Yale College and did much to broaden and advance higher education. His "Travels in New England and New York" are noteworthy.

Born in 1828, an editor of the New Englander from 1856, was a member of the committee to revise the English version of the Bible, from 1878 to 1885, and in 1886 was chosen president of Yale University.
