(1737-1798), Episcopal clergyman in Philadelphia, espoused the patriot cause at the beginning of the Revolution. He was the first chaplain of the Congress in 1774. He despaired of success for the colonies, and in 1777 advised Washington by letter to abandon the attempt. This made him so unpopular that he went to England.
