(1768-1812), a journalist, was one of the first Americans to obtain fame in light literature. Removing from New England to Philadelphia, he was editor, from 1801 on, of the Portfolio, a literary magazine which maintained a higher standard than any of its predecessors. He had also a reputation as a graceful and humorous essayist.
