This denomination was a development of the Great Western Revival of 1800. The Presbytery in Kentucky appointed lay preachers, who were said to be illiterate and unsound in doctrine. The suspension of these by the synod resulted in a schism in 1811 and the formation of the above named sect. In the main it is an attempt to steer between the Calvinism of the Presbyterians and the Arminianism of the Methodists. They now number over 165,000 members, largely confined to the South.
