A distinguished Italian statesman, educator, and philosophical writer; born at Pesaro, about 1800; died at Rome, May 21, 1885. He was imprisoned and exiled for taking part in the revolution at Bologna in 1831; made Minister of the Interior in 1848; Minister of Public Instruction in 1860; Minister to Athens. He wrote numerous and important books, among which are: "Confessions of a Metaphysician" (2d ed. 1865); "The Religion of the Future" (1879); "Social Questions" (1882); etc.
