At a very early period of foetal formation, bodies are perceptible, which were first described by Wolff, as existing in the fowl, and in the mammalia by Oken. According to Muller, they disappear in man very early, so that but slight remains of them are perceptible after the 9th or 10th week of pregnancy. They cover the region of the kidneys and renal capsules, which are formed afterwards; and they are presumed to be the organs of urinary secretion during the first periods of foetal existence.
