A name given during the last century the last century, to individuals who had, or affected to have, convulsions, produced by religious impulses. The epithet was first given to fanatics, who exhibited the most wonderful and varied seizures, at the tomb of Paris, a Jansenist, who died in the year 1727, and was buried in the cemetery of St. Medard.
