An eminent English historian; born at Stepney, London, Feb. 11, 1797; died July 27, 1875, at Bath. He was Bishop of St. David's 1840-74. His principal work is a "History of Greece" (8 vols., 1835-40; enlarged 1845-52). He made, with J. C. Hare, the English translation of Niebuhr's "History of Rome" (2 vols., 1828).
