A French writer, member of the Academy; born in Loches, March 27, 1799; died in Paris, Sept. 18, 1863. He left military service for literature; and his romance "Cinq-Mars" (1826) went through several editions. He also wrote several plays; his translation of "Othello" was acted in 1829, and his "Chatterton" was a complete triumph. In 1843 he published several poems in the Revue des Deux Mondes. His "Consultations of Dr. Noir" appeared in 1856.
