An American editor and author; born at Laona, Chautauqua County, N. Y., July 29, 1850. He was connected with the New York Tribune from 1875 to 1881, when he joined the staff of the Century Magazine; and in 1883, in conjunction with Robert Underwood Johnson, he began the editing of the celebrated "Century War Articles", which were afterwards expanded into the notable "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War" (1887).
