In October, 1775, the General Assembly passed an act for the establishment of a college at Charleston. Owing, however, to the Revolution its first class was not graduated till 1794. In 1886 the college was almost destroyed by an earthquake, but was very soon rebuilt. Its law school was opened in 1864.
