A French librettist, dramatist, and descriptive writer; born in Jouy, near Versailles, 1764; died at Paris, Sept. 4, 1846. He entered upon a military career in connection with the Revolution and the restoration, and wrote an opera libretto, "The Vestal", which won him a reputation. "Ferdinand Cortez" and "William Tell" came next, followed by "Sylla", a tragedy. "The Hermit of the Chaussee d'Antin" is his best thing in prose. This, and other writings in similar vein, had once a tremendous vogue as witty and faithful portraiture of contemporary folly.
