the nickname applied to the religious Separatists of England during the latter part of the sixteenth century. Robert Brown, who introduced the Separatist doctrines, was a Church of England clergyman of Norwich until 1580, when he began declaiming against the discipline and ceremony of the church. The Puritans were largely influenced by the Separatist doctrines. The Pilgrim Fathers were Brownists.
