An American journalist, descriptive writer, and novelist; born at Baltimore, Md., Sept. 27, 1809; died there, Feb. 23, 1879. He was a lawyer by profession; became editor of the Baltimore American; was attached to the American Iegation in Mexico, 1841-42; served in the Civil War. He wrote several works on Mexico, including "Mexico: Aztec, Spanish, and Republican" (2 vols., 1853), his best work; "Captain Canot" (1854), a novel; etc.
