Here, June 17, 1861, Captain Nathaniel Lyon, commanding about 2000 Federal troops, defeated Price, the Confederate general, whose army numbered several thousand poorly armed and unorganized volunteers. This battle was the outcome of numerous secessionist plots fomented by Governor Jackson, of Missouri, and General Price. Lyon captured twenty prisoners, two six-pounder guns and the supplies of the Confederate camp.
