(1750-1778), of Philadelphia, naval officer, one of the first captains appointed by Congress in 1775, In 1778, while engaging the "Yarmouth," British, 64, his ship, the "Randolph,"32, blew up.

(1786-1844), after leaving Princeton entered the diplomatic service, and afterward edited the magazine, the Portfolio. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature, and became a government director of the United States Bank and its president. In this latter position he was a central figure in the fierce struggle which Jackson waged with the bank. He resigned the presidency in 1839.
