(1793-1869), born in Virginia, became a prominent lawyer in Missouri. Having warmly opposed the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, he was a somewhat prominent candidate for the Republican nomination to the presidency in the Chicago Convention of 1860. He was attorney-general under Lincoln from 1861 to 1863.
