A Spanish missionary to the aborigines of New Spain; born at Seville, 1474; died at Madrid, July 1566. Moved to compassion by the inhuman treatment of the natives by their Spanish taskmasters, he labored to have them put under protection of the law, and to have slaves imported from Africa for labor in the mines and on the plantations. He wrote memoirs in the interest of the aborigines, as "A Very Brief Account of the Ruin of the Indies" (1542); "Twenty Reasons"; etc. He wrote a "History of the Indies", but it has not been printed.
