(ARMM) A Usenet robot created by Dick Depew ofMunroe Falls, Ohio. ARMM was intended to automatically cancelposts from anonymous-posting sites. Unfortunately, therobot's recogniser for anonymous postings triggered on its ownautomatically-generated control messages! Transformed by thisstroke of programming ineptitude into a monster ofFrankensteinian proportions, it broke loose on the night of1993-03-31 and proceeded to spam news:news.admin.policywith a recursive explosion of over 200 messages.Reactions varied from amusement to outrage. The pathologicalmessages crashed at least one mail system, and upset peoplepaying line charges for their Usenet feeds. One posterdescribed the ARMM debacle as "instant Usenet history" (alsoestablishing the term despew), and it has since been widelycited as a cautionary example of the havoc the combination ofgood intentions and incompetence can wreak on a network.Compare Great Worm; sorcerer's apprentice mode. See alsosoftware laser, network meltdown.
