This word has been used for the dissection of arteries. Most commonly, however, it means a surgical operation, which consists in opening an artery, to draw blood from it. Arteriotomy is chiefly used in inflammatory affections of the head, when the blood is generally obtained from the temporal artery. See Bloodletting.
