A contemporary Spanish novelist and critic, residing at Oviedo, Spain. A representative of the new realistic school of Spanish fiction, he is best known to English readers by the powerful novels "Maximina" (1888) and "Sister St. Sulpice" (1890), translated by N. H. Dole. Next in importance are: "The Marquis of Penalta" (English translation 1886); "Idyl of an Invalid"; "Jose"; "Riverita" (of which "Maximina" is a sequel); "Froth". His critical works include: "The Athenian Orators"; "Spanish Novelists"; "New Journey to Parnassus".
