A circular area, usually from an inch to an inch and a half in diameter, surrounding the nipple; of a pink color in healthy women who are not pregnant; provided with from ten to twenty visible sebaceous follicles. During pregnancy, and sometimes in consequence of uterine disease, it becomes darker in color, occasionally almost black, and somewhat raised above the surrounding skin, and the follicles are enlarged and moisten its surface with their secretion. See secondary areolae.
