Born in Rhode Island in 1829, educator, was professor of modern languages and literature in Brown University from 1853 to 1860; editor of the "Providence Journal" from 1860 to 1866; president of the University of Vermont from 1866 to 1871, since which time he has been president of the University of Michigan, except during 1880 and 1881, when he was Minister of the United States in China.
