Dropsy throughout the body.
By William R. Warner
-
Commonly, it begins to manifest itself by swelling around the ankles; and is characterized by tumefaction of the limbs and of the soft parts covering the abdomen, thorax, and even the face, with paleness and dryness of the skin, and pitting when any of these (especially the ankles) are pressed upon. Like dropsy in general, Anasarca may be active or passive; and its treatment must be regulated by the rules that are applicable to general dropsy. At times, the symptoms are of an acute character, and the effusion sudden, constituting Dermatoch'ysis, Hydrops Anasar'ca acu'tua, Cede'ma cal'idum, CE. acu'tum, CE.febri'le of some. See Hydrops.
